During the past five years, as traditional media conglomerates have lurched toward their streaming futures with a mixture of alacrity and trepidation, there’s been some divergence on strategy and tactics. Some companies, like NBCU and Paramount, have made the fateful decision to lean headlong into the future by simulcasting their most precious live sports assets on streaming—a seemingly small gesture that nevertheless grossly undercuts the value of their broadcast networks and cable assets to both consumers and distributors.
