Cecily Brown, the 55-year-old British artist, has become the dominant painter in a long, unbroken chain of figures who have dominated the medium—and the last in a line of those making self-conscious art that responds to high culture, informed by literature, philosophy, and art history. Those unique talents are currently on display in a new show of her work at Paula Cooper Gallery and a mid-career retrospective, Cecily Brown: Themes and Variations, at the Dallas Museum of Art, which will travel to the Barnes Foundation later this year, coming on the heels of her show, Death and the Maid, at the Met last year.
