The Daily Courant

Pickleball Economics, Champagne Eco-Futurism, Lithuania’s Fashion Invasion!

Welcome back to The Daily Courant, your afternoon guide to Puck’s best new reporting. Here’s what you need to know… and stick around for more on the White House’s A.I. policy confusion.

  • The Hidden Layer: After a yearlong anything-goes policy toward A.I., the Trump White House is suddenly mulling an F.D.A.-style preapproval process for new models… or is it? Ian Krietzberg digs into what’s driving the about-face—from Anthropic’s secretive Mythos model to J.D. Vance’s 2028 ambitions. [Read More]
  • What I’m Hearing: After years of rejecting the traditional Hollywood playbook, industry insiders are whispering that Netflix may be about to change its tune on theatrical distribution. Kim Masters taps her sources on why Ted Sarandos might take the plunge. Plus: Is there any future for Justin Baldoni after the Blake Lively mess? [Read More]
  • The Varsity: Private equity firms are flooding into sports, and SC Holdings’ Jason Stein thinks the trend is still in its infancy. John Ourand grills the seasoned investor on the commercialization of college athletics, and why he and LeBron (!) are still bullish on pickleball. [Read More]
  • Line Sheet: Vinted, the Lithuanian resale juggernaut now valued at $9 billion, has quietly taken over Europe. Malique Morris breaks down whether the company can make it in America. [Read More]
  • Wall Power: Joris Laarman, the Dutch designer whose algorithm-crafted chair once fetched nearly $1 million at auction, is back with his first gallery show in more than a decade. Ingrid Abramovitch examines Laarman’s eco-futurist shift and whether the market is ready for his reinvention. [Read More]

Meanwhile, on the pods…

  • The Grill Room: Dylan Byers is joined by John and CNBC’s Alex Sherman to chew over the upfronts-season standoff between legacy networks and streamers over NFL broadcast rights—and how Roger Goodell and Rupert Murdoch are navigating the league’s biggest prize. [Listen Here]
  • The Powers That Be: Peter Hamby and Marianna Sotomayor measure the House Democratic flop sweat after the Supreme Court blew a hole in the Voting Rights Act. [Listen Here]

And now, a little more on Trump’s A.I. policy pivot…

A.I.

Trump’s Mythos Panic Attack

Trump’s Mythos Panic Attack

For more than a year, the Trump White House has run its A.I. policy with an anything-goes attitude: Joe Biden’s safety-testing executive order was scrapped on day one, A.I. czar David Sacks was installed as Silicon Valley’s liaison, and the administration’s “A.I. Action Plan” read like it had been drafted by the industry’s own lobbyists. But now, the administration is suddenly weighing executive actions to give A.I. models the F.D.A. treatment—a pivot so abrupt that chief of staff Susie Wiles felt compelled to step in and contradict Kevin Hassett and Scott Bessent.

What’s really going on? As Ian reports, one catalyst for the vibe shift appears to be Anthropic’s secretive Mythos model, whose capabilities have unnerved early users and D.C. operators alike. Then there’s J.D. Vance’s inner circle, which has been pushing the West Wing toward a safety-and-security frame. And, of course, there’s another source of pressure that may prove even more decisive: business lobbyists. The administration insists no formal policy has been decided, but something seems to have spooked the White House…

Democrats’ Redistricting Panic

Marianna Sotomayor—Puck’s new Capitol Hill correspondent—joins Peter to dig into the sudden Democratic panic about losing the House in November, after the Supreme Court’s blow to the Voting Rights Act sent Republican-led Southern states racing to redraw their maps and the Virginia Supreme Court killed the Democrats’ counterplay. Marianna explains why even the smartest prognosticators won’t predict a winner now, and why some lawmakers want a truce.
