And now, a little more on 60 Minutes’s new head honcho…
|

|
Last Thursday morning, just minutes after Bari Weiss announced her audacious overhaul of
60 Minutes, Dylan got a call from the show’s newly appointed executive producer. Nick Bilton, the former New York Times reporter and Vanity Fair writer who left journalism to pursue a career in Hollywood, will now oversee editorial direction and story selection at America’s most popular news program—and, like Bari, has no leadership or managerial background, let alone any experience in broadcast television.
In conversation with Dylan, Bilton
argued that’s part of his appeal. “You can’t necessarily have an insider change an institution from the inside, because they don’t know how to look at it from a different perspective,” he said. “Sometimes you need an outsider.” Perhaps that’s true, but there’s scant evidence that even a name-brand columnist can wrangle TV egos, navigate production schedules, and lead the old broadcast guard to their multiplatform salvation. But Bilton seems to know what Bari wants—and she made him an offer he
couldn’t refuse. “There was no part of me that wanted to come back to journalism,” he told Dylan. “But when Bari approached me about [the job], I couldn’t get it out of my head.”

After the president helped end the careers of two of their own, many in the Senate G.O.P. feel he’s broken their political contract. Now,
instead of constantly bowing to the executive branch, they’re agitating to fight, or at least stand up for themselves.
